In order to own and operate a vehicle in Illinois, it must pass an emissions test. But what do you do if your vehicle fails? Follow these tips from our Jeep® service experts at Fields Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM and you’ll stay cruising with limited emissions.
Illinois Inspection Requirements
All vehicles in Illinois must pass an emissions inspection once they are four years old (and every two years thereafter) if they meet the following requirements:
- Most gasoline-powered passenger vehicles dated 1996 or newer
- Heavy-duty trucks dated 2007 and newer (if they weigh 8,501-14,000 pounds)
New residents are also required to complete an emissions test. First, you need to register your vehicle and then wait until you receive a testing notice.
Exemptions to Testing Requirements
Some areas in Illinois are exempt from testing, however. Make sure to check inspection requirements and exemptions to see if your county and zip code are exempt. Some vehicles are exempt as well, including:
- Vehicles dated 1967 or older
- Vehicles dated 1995 or older (if compliant with the Illinois Vehicle Emissions Inspection Law)
- Diesel-powered vehicles
- Electric vehicles
- Specialty vehicles such as antique vehicles, custom vehicles, farm vehicles, parade-purpose vehicles, and more
