If you need a truck for some seriously heavy-duty work, going with a RAM truck is a wise idea. This guide looks at three RAM trucks and their towing ability to help you determine the best one for your needs.

RAM 1500

The RAM 1500 comes with a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. There are three other engines available:

  • 7-liter V8: 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque
  • 0-liter V6 diesel: 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque
  • Supercharged 6.2-liter V8: 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque

All engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while four-wheel drive is available. The base V6 engine will let you tow up to 7,730 pounds. The V6 diesel increases that to 12,560 pounds. And if you go with a V8, you’ll get the maximum tow rating of 12,750 pounds.

RAM 2500

You’ll get a 6.4-liter V8 as the base engine in the RAM 2500, and this generates 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The optional 6.7-liter Cummins diesel inline-6 offers 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque. The towing ability of the base engine is nothing to sneeze at, as it has a tow rating of 14,370 pounds. With the diesel engine, that number climbs all the way up to 19,010 pounds.

RAM 3500

The RAM 3500 comes standard with that 6.7-liter Cummins diesel inline-6 engine that produces 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque. But for the most towing ability, you’ll want the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel that will give you 420 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. This will let you tow up to 37,100 pounds.
