In addition to never having to buy gas, there’s another big advantage of buying an electric vehicle (EV) that doesn’t get as much attention. EVs don’t have as many parts and systems as gas-powered vehicles, so they don’t require as much maintenance, and repairs aren’t needed as frequently. Our Jeep® service experts are here to show you what’s involved in keeping an electric car running well.
What an EV Doesn’t Need
Cars that run on gas have engines that utilize oil. With an electric vehicle, oil changes are something you can immediately cross off your service to-do list. The same is true for replacing spark plugs or the air filter. And while electric cars do have transmissions, they aren’t multi-speed units, so they usually don’t require much, if any, servicing.
What an EV Does Need
This shouldn’t imply, however, that electric cars don’t need any service. There is at least one essential maintenance task that they share with all cars: tire rotations. To keep tires from wearing out too quickly, they need to be rotated regularly — about every six months. This helps improve their performance and boosts safety as well. You should monitor your tire pressure and keep them at their optimal psi (pounds per square inch); keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment for whenever you need to top them off.
Your EV also contains systems with fluids — including the braking and cooling systems and windshield wipers — that also need to be inspected often and topped off as needed. This goes the same for air filters; they should be inspected and replaced by our professionals when necessary.
