If you aren’t prepared, a flat tire can be more than an inconvenience. You don’t want to run the risk of ending up stranded and unsafe. Our RAM service experts at Fields Chrysler Jeep® Dodge RAM Glenview have a few tips to help.
Practice Safety First
Before you begin, make sure your car is a safe distance from traffic on the road and that you’re in a safe area. Turn on your emergency flashers and put down a reflective warning sign behind your vehicle. Apply your parking brake and add wheel wedges if you have them.
Gather Everything You Need
Get your spare tire ready and make sure that it has adequate pressure. Gather the tools you need including your car jack and lug wrench (which may be built into your jack). Don’t forget anything you may need for your surroundings such as an umbrella, flashlight, or drop cloth.
Changing Your Flat
Once you’re prepared, follow these steps carefully:
- Remove the hubcap (if applicable)
- Loosen your lug nuts using the lug wrench (but not completely)
- Place the jack under a solid metal part of your vehicle’s frame near the wheel
- Raise your vehicle approximately six inches off the ground
- Unscrew the lug nuts completely and remove the flat tire
- Add your spare tire and put your lug nuts back on
- Tighten your lug nuts by hand
- Lower your vehicle so that it’s resting on the ground and tighten your lug nuts completely with your lug wrench
- Replace the hubcap
- Stow away all your equipment
