Have you noticed puddles under your car? Ugh, that’s never a welcome sight. Our Jeep® service experts at Fields Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM Glenview can help you figure it out before it’s too late.

Engine Oil

Engine oil is typically an amber color. However, as it ages it turns to a darker brown or black. An engine oil leak is typically the result of a worn or corroded seal or gasket, but it can also span from the valve cover or even your oil pan.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid can often be mistaken for engine oil, particularly if it’s old and has started to darken. If you notice a red hue when you inspect it though, you’ll know it’s your transmission fluid. Oftentimes, transmission fluid also has a strong odor.

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid is also often mistaken for transmission fluid since it also has a reddish hue and darkens to brown as it ages. If you’re uncertain, try to see where the fluid is coming from. If the leak is near the left side of your car, towards the front, it’s probably your power steering fluid.

Coolant

Coolant comes in a variety of bright shades including pink, blue, green, orange, and more. If you notice a bright leak and your car is overheating, it’s likely your coolant.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is almost clear but has a slight yellowish tint. It can also turn brown the older it gets. If you have a brake fluid leak, your brakes may not work properly, so it’s important to have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
